Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” (IATA: SKG) is an international airport serving Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece. Located 13 km southeast of the city, in the area of Thermi, the airport is the third-largest airport in the country, after Athens International Airport and Heraklion International Airport. Opened in 1930, it is the main airport serving Northern Greece, as apart from the city of Thessaloniki, it also facilitates transport to the popular touristic destination of Chalkidiki and other surrounding cities of Central Macedonia. Air transfer from Athens to Thessaloniki is the tenth busiest route in the EU reaching up to 1.8 million passengers, turning it into a busy airport. Recent operations refurbished the existing terminal and launched the construction of a second terminal, given to public in the spring of 2020.
