It is named after the Greek politician from Crete, Eleftherios Venizelos, who, as a Prime Minister, founded the Civil Aviation Authority.
Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport was awarded in 2008 by the EU Commision with a “Green Building” award, as it managed to reduce its energy consumption, regardless the increase in passengers.
