Corfu Airport Details
Corfu International Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias” (IATA: CFU) is located very close to Corfu town, connecting the famous island to Greek and European cities. Named after Corfiot Ioannis Kapodistrias, first governor of Greece, the airport reaches high air traffic during the touristic season, between April and October.
Access between the airport and Corfu town is provided via the urban city bus. Airport taxi transfer is also offered, providing transfer to Corfu town within only 10 minutes.
Corfu is the beautiful island of the northern part of Ionian Sea, full of amazing beaches and rich green plantation. Apart from the Venetian old town that can make you fall in love, Corfu holds the benefit of a lot of different and unique places, depending on whether you visit its north or south, but also its eastern coastline across Ionian Sea, or its western beaches overlooking to Adriatic Sea.
Your trip to Corfu should of course start by a tour in the Old Town of Corfu. Your taxi transfer can drive you comfortably to Corfu town, but, in order to explore its old part, you have to do it on foot. Stroll around the small paved streets, called kantounia, visit the Old Fortress accessible to the city by a bridge and do not hesitate to climb up its top – the view will compensate any heavy breathing. In front of it lies a wide green square, Spianada, an ideal place to relax, regardless the season. There, you will also find the famous Liston, an elegant arcade full of cafés. Take a break there and then visit the church of Saint Spyridon, dated back to 1580, with its Renaissance bell tower standing tall among the city. The church hosts the relics of St Spyridon, a marble classical iconostasis and an amazing painted ceiling. If you are looking for some museums in the city centre, then the Archaeological Museum as well as the Museum of Asian Art are worth spending some time in. End your day trip at the New Fortress, which, though not accessible to visitors, hosts small atmospheric bars, known mostly to locals, which are worth visiting for a drink.
Taking a taxi transfer on Corfu’s countryside, you will see that there are numerous little villages, beaches and green areas to explore, regardless the month you are travelling. Paleokastritsa Beach for instance is a famous place to visit in Corfu and only a glance at its turquoise waters will explain why. High walls of rocks and sea caves surround its clear – and almost always cold – waters, whereas a golden sand completes the scenery. Other famous beaches include Canal d’Amour of Sidary in the northern part of Corfu, where you should carefully select your swimming company, as, according to locals, any couples swimming through the tunnel together, get married. In contrast to Corfu’s rocky northern beaches, the south offers sandier, desert-like ones, with one of the most famous being Issos Beach. Close to Lake Korission and traced by dunes, Issos Beach will surely sweep away all your stressful thoughts in its vast, golden sand.
Besides swimming and sunbathing on the beach, you can also take a taxi transfer up to the north, in an abandoned village right under Mount Pantokrator, called Old Perithia. The village is dated back to the 1300s, featuring picturesque ruins of past mansions and houses across a beautiful landscape consisting of oaks, vines and cypress trees. On the other part of Corfu, another interesting destination to visit is Achilleion Palace, summer residence of Elisabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria. The Neoclassical palace, themed around the Greek hero Achilles, besides the great architecture and beautiful gardens, features also statues inspired by Greek mythology outdoors, as well a wide collection of memorabilia relating to Elisabeth and Kaiser Wilhelm II, its next habitant. The massive painting by Franz Matsch will surely capture your attention.
Last but not least, you surely have to visit one of Corfu’s landmarks, Monastery of Vlacherna in Kanoni. Set on an islet at the end of a narrow jetty, the chapel is dated back to 1685. You can also take a boat ride to Pontikonissi Island located close by, where another 12th – century monastery lies between pine and cypress trees. The scenery of both Vlacherena and Pontikonissi is on itself a true beauty, best admired by the hilltop of Kanoni.
