Chania Airport Details
Chania International Airport “Daskalogiannis” (IATA: CHQ) is the second international airport of the Greek island Crete, located near the area Souda, as well as 14 kilometres away from the city of Chania. Named after Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a Cretan hero resisting to Ottoman ruling, it serves the western part of Crete, especially during the touristic period, connecting Chania with Athens and Thessaloniki but also offering many international destinations.
Access to Chania International Airport is provided via the city bus, connecting the airport with Chania town and other surrounding areas, as well as by taxi transfer via the main road network.
On the western part of the beautiful island of Crete, you will find Chania, one of the most picturesque towns in Greece. Cobbled streets, fortresses and the Venetian harbour create a unique vibe, inviting all guests to get lost inside of it. Once arrived in the airport or port of Souda, take your taxi transfer to start your exploration of the beautiful Town Chania.
Start your adventure at the old harbour of the town, dated back to the 14th century. Stroll in the promenade where seafood restaurants and cafés are found, and visit the Ottoman mosque built in 1645 where today a small art gallery is located. Take a walk on the Venetian seawall by the Venetian arsenals to the lighthouse reminiscing a minaret, where you can climb the stairs to admire the sea. Across the channel from the lighthouse, the Maritime Museum hosts a wide collection of artefacts reminding Crete’s important relationship with the sea throughout the time. Since Chania was the ancient Kydonia, founded by the Minoans around 2200 BC, it is always worth travelling back to this time. Hosted in the Gothic Church of San Francesco, the Archaeological Museum exhibits findings from the western Crete dating back from Neolithic era to the Roman times.
Take a daily trip with your private taxi to the Botanic Park and Gardens at Fournes, only 18 kilometres away from Chania. At the foot of the mountain Lefka Ori, this park offers a variety of exotic flowers and trees from all over the world. Take a tour in this garden full of aromas and relax in its shaded spots or the restaurant built within. Another interesting trip nature-lovers will fall for is a hike to the Samaria Gorge. If you love to hike, then arrange a taxi transfer to the village of Omalos. There, you can take the deep, narrow path across the gorges, the longest of which – called Samaria – extends to 18 kilometres, and find the beautiful black-sand beach of Agia Roumeli. Along the way, search for kri-kri, the unique goats of Crete, and do not forget to arrange your transfer back to Chania. It is a one-way hike, so take the ferry to Sfakia and have your private driver take you home from there.
Of course, you cannot say that you have seen Crete if you have not visited its spectacular beaches. Consider to ask your driver about the beach of Balos, one among the locals’ favourites. Driving along the peninsula of Gramvousa, you will leave your driver and then hike to find a lagoon with emerald waters. The tiny islet, surrounded by a Venetian fort, completes a mesmerizing picture hard to forget. Last but not least, on the southwest coast of Crete, Elafonisi beach is an absolute beaty, offering colours no Instagram filter can conquer. Pink hues on the sand, due to shells and corals, and turquoise waters form an amazing scenery. If you are into kite or wind surfing, then this beach is for you.
